To avoid the famous "hunting idle" because the rpm increases when the timing advances, set/checking ignition timing and carb air screws with 2 pieces of cardboard wedged in between the advance weights and the stops.
Late carb air screws are hidden under the pressed in covers shown at the arrows above, around 3 turns out is usually best.

Carbon brushes for many things can be made from the carbon core that comes in "D" cell batteries. Trim to shape on a belt sander or on a flat surface with sandpaper.
You can replace the stripped right hand side stock master cylinder left hand threaded mirror mount by finding a Suzuki GS1000 - GS1100 stock master cylinder handlebar clamp. It has 10mm X 1.25 right hand threads that many aftermarket mirror sets will fit.

Oversize Valves for the XS650
I have never liked Champion plugs but many of the NGK plugs we fitted in many types of bikes seem to fail early the last few years for some reason. We have used these Champion plugs in many XS motors for several years now and they do not foul, they just keep going. Quite a surprise. They have a much broader heat range, burn cleaner and the most projected tip I have ever seen. (small compression increase) A two year old set is still in our cruiser right now. They are copper core plugs for a late model Big Twin Harley Davidson. The Champion number is RN12YC or # 404. They are called: Copper PlusŪ. You cannot use these with aftermarket camshafts or oversize intake valves however. The intake valve will hit the ground electrode. Get them at a Harley Shop. These have the large size high tension wire end fitted that is not removeable. Standard NGK resistor caps will not fit these plugs.

Stiffer fork leg booster springs are shown at the top left fork spring above, they improve the bikes ride considerably, and don't limit the travel like the stock spacer shown on the second spring, and on a budget.

GS450 Suzuki gas tank makes a nice cafe type XS650 tank.
450 tank bottom is super wide compared to the stock XS tank tunnel. Rubber front mounts need to be reversed on a rod through the frame for the GS tank.
The above cafe racer image was sent in from France, check out the tank on it!
