XS 650 Yamaha Bike Project # 4

Our 2 up weekend cruiser, errand, and parts chaser bike.

Got this immaculate 20K mile 1980 XS 650 G with keys, title, lots of accessories and a small hole in the number 2 piston for $300.00. It leaned out at highway cruising speeds on a cross country trip from Oregon to Florida, lucky for me!

Bobby got really fired up and dove right in to this father son project, he has just removed the exhaust system in the above image! The luggage rack with storage room for a bag of toys, and the passenger back rest sealed the fate of this one.

These bikes are really simple to work on, we had the old motor on the ground in less than an hour with basic hand tools.

The old motor looks great, except for the right hand piston, which will be replaced with a Wiseco forged 763 cc piston kit in the motor we took out. A vacuum leak and restricted carb jets at high speeds overheated the RH piston. Fresh fuel filters are cheap insurance against engine damage.

Yamaha art work! A 20 year old stock 1980 motor that has only 330 miles on it! I have never seen one in this like new condition. Decided to put it in this 1980 bike, its the year that Yamaha started putting factory electronic ignition in the XS 650's. The charging system has a small magnet in the rotor that passes the "Hall Effect" ignition signal pickup box (the long oval black box above). A magnetic field from the small trigger magnet in the rotor passes the pickup and generates a signal that triggers transistor switching to send battery voltage through the coils and eliminate mechanical points and ignition advancers that can wear and change.

The 1980 motor on the right is not even broken in yet, and has the original Yamaha oil in it. A guy fell down on the original bike and parked it for 20 years. It was a perfect motor to replace the original 1980 motor, it is stamped only a few hundred motor numbers from the original that was also produced for the 1980 production run.

The new motor is installed in the bike in the above image, check out the valve spring and rocker arm cavity, all clean like new!
