Budget XS650 Universal Petcock and Adapter:

Small chrome universal petcock and adapter that will fit many motorcycle applications.

Troublesome stock petcock that has been on "prime" for over 8K miles of riding on our 1980 model. We have VM Mikuni carbs and do not need the failed vacuum port connection on this bulky old stock petcock either. I had placed another on/off petcock in the line after this one to use as a fuel shutoff, so we have had no "reserve fuel" feature either.

This replacement petcock (above and below) from many bike shops is sold by Tucker/Rocky, and/or Bikers Choice. It is part number 49-2600. It retails for $14.45. Bikers Choice is the big twin parts division of the same company. The universal blank tank fuel valve adapter is made by Pingel and is Dennis Kirk part number 181671. It is available online (when in stock) for $9.00. The adapter is chrome plated brass.

Use teflon tape to seal the petcocks 3/8" npt pipe threads to the tank mounting adapter. The 90° brass fuel discharge outlet is for 1/4" fuel line.

Use the original petcock with the fuel standpipe removed as a template and center punch the holes to mount the adapter to your tank. (above and below)

Machine shop layout dye or a magic marker works great for marking the new hole spacing.

Use your new drilled adapter as a template for the bolt holes in the new gasket that is "included" with the tank mounting adapter.

The replacement petcock has a reserve stand pipe and filter assembly that needs the tank standpipe hole enlarged in the 2 outer edge spots shown inside the big center hole above. Be safe and use common sense here, no grinding stones or gas allowed. I will not be responsible if you blow yourself up. A rat tail file works great in an air dried tank to enlarge the hole on the outer edges shown in the above image.

Be careful and trim the tank standpipe hole edges only what is necessary, these edges are the thinnest sealing part of the adapter. I rinsed the tank out with some new fuel and drained it out through the new enlarged petcock mounting hole to be sure it was clean and no metal filings remained inside.

Silicone sealer on the stock tank petcock mounting bolt gaskets just under the bolt heads and on the threads.

The new small chrome petcock is manual and has on / off / and reserve. Yea!
