1982 Heritage Special:

Following are pictures of my 1982 XS650 Heritage Special. It sat in my garage from 1995 for ten years, not that I ever wanted it to. Finally I got it running in 05' but one carburetor was plugged and I wasn't ever able to get it completely cleared. I bought a set of Mikuni barrel slides and was amazed by the improvement in performance, more power, smoother running and much easier to start. The bike runs great and the compression is 150 in both cylinders with almost 18,000 miles. I always loved this bike but never liked the looks of the stock fat seat or huge headlight. Having visited your site many, many times, and seeing what other people had done, I decided last winter to get this bike looking like I wanted it to look. Major changes are - 1980 seat which I lowered by 1 inch. 11&1/2" rear shocks which lowered the seat another 1&1/2 inchs. Chrome 6" headlight. Cafe style handlebars mounted upward with 2 inch risers. Signal lights, mirrors, grips. Of course most of these and other mechanical parts all came from Mikes XS. The biggest surprise was how well the bike handles with the new bars. I now have a sleek, cool looking bike that rides, runs and handles great! Doug Craner - milewskicraner@mac.com
