1977 Custom Bike:

Hi, It's a '77D model which I've owned for 15 years. I've completely rebuilt her and I think her best feature is the motor. It's a 750 with JE pistons, Carrillo rods, 90 degree crank, ported head with stainless valves, R & D springs, Porsche tappets, high volume oil pump, remote filter and cooler, 1 3/4" exhaust, 36mm Mikuni flat slides, 2 Boyer-Bransden ignitions in a custom made housing, permanent magnet alternator off a Yamaha RZ-250, belt driven cam, hydraulic clutch with Barnett plates & springs, and belt final drive. Aside from that, the swingarm was hand made, the forks are from a Suzuki GSXR-750 in custom made 10" wide trees, the side covers and mudguards were hand made by in 'glass, and the front wheel is a rear wheel with an early drilled disc and Performance Machine calliper. Most of the custom stuff was made my myself and a couple of friends.   It's almost completely maintenance free. I don't have to adjust the timing chain, clean and adjust the drive chain, adjust the tappets, check and adjust the timing, adjust the clutch cable, go inside the motor to clean or change the oil filter, or check and replace the alternator brushes. About all I do is change the oil and screw on a new filter every once in a while. It's a solid as a rock on the road and is an absolute missile. Being a 90 degree motor, it'll rev off the dial and gets smoother as the revs rise. At 140 km/h, the image in the mirror is crystal clear and my bars are not rubber mounted. Oh, and it sounds like a Ducati SS-750 from the '70s. All in all, I'm very happy with it. If you have any questions, contact me at dave650@bigpond.net.au   David Rayner.
