XS 650 Original Compression Release:
This is what the 4 bolt square exhaust valve inspection cover is for and why all the later models still have it.
Special rocker arms with extended tips are required to work with the release assembly.
This assembly is also the early (1972-1974 yr. area) throttle housing. Squeezing the compression release lever also actuated the electric starter.
