A Street Tracker:
Hi there,
Love your site and thought
I would contribute my little 'Beasty' to it. It's not quite
finished yet... but it has gone around the block a couple of
times with no problems. I'm a Limey living in Texas and wanted to
give it a build that could very easily be switched from a US
style Flat Track to a UK style Cafe Racer with just a pair of
clip-ons and a bigger gas tank. Note the use of road tires
instead of dirt track tires... helps a lot on the road. It's a...
or should I say 'was' a 79 650 Special with a few minor mods... I
personally like the Ducati Brembo rotors with SV650 dual piston
calipers (It would have got 4 piston, but they would have hit the
spokes). It does seem to stop like you have hit a brick wall now.
It uses an FZR600 front rotor on the rear with a Grimeca caliper
and a 12" flat track brake hanger. All brake lines are
carbo-look stainless hoses and most of the nuts and bolts on this
little thing are stainless too (except the metric fine thread
stuff as it seems near-impossible to get that here). The rear
wheel is courtesy of an RD400 with different bearings and seals
to cope with the fatter 650 axle, aluminum sprocket, bronze
bushings, taper rollers.. blah blah blah. The engine is nearly
stock, except for a Boyer ignition, mildly modded head and 34mm
Mikuni round slides... not forgetting the huge K&N's. The
exhaust will become a Jemco 1/2 mile when I have a spare $300.
All the electrics are under the tank or seat and will get an
integrated tail light (made, but not installed) and should end up
'Texas' legal... ish. As you might be able to see.. the frame is
heavily shaved and it all probably weighs together 80lbs less
than stock... I'll have to get the bathroom scales out. I now
have a bunch of XS650 Special parts left over if anyone wants
anything. Britbits@austin.rr.com
