1978 Street Tracker:

Hi,

A few shots of my 78 SE done as a street tracker. Like many here, your site was the inspiration for me to complete this project. I came across the site over three years ago and was immediately taken by the "cafe" style bikes. Being a "Brit" I was some how drawn to them and was determined to build one. After searching for a donor bike I came up with the SE which lends itself more to the tracker so off I went in that direction. Using many of the fine examples on the site as a guide and finding the guys on the 650 board I started the build last October. I'm not really finished ( are we ever?) but stopped fiddling in September to get some seat time before winter ( comes quickly in Ontario). Lots of mark 2 modifications planned for winter such as swingarm and suspension and possibly some work on the head. Tank graphics also have to be put on this winter and new rubber for the spring. Currently, the bike has a stock frame ( minus unnecessary tabs and center stand and lightened where ever possible) and engine. All bearings were redone along with the swingarm bushes. Front forks have RaceTech cartridge emulators and a second brake disk. Brake disks were drilled and master cylinder is from an FJ1100 ( no problem for 2 finger stops) Rear end is stock with the addition of shocks from an HD The seat/tail was made by me in the fiberglass over foam technique and the seat pad was done in marine vinyl to match the checker graphics also laid out and painted by myself. As everyone says, these bikes are blast to ride. I love the bark from the "sporty" type mufflers and the torque is phenomenal when you drop the hammer. I'm hooked and on the look out for another!

Cheers, Andy
