XS650 18T Front Sprocket and a 530 O ring Chain

Neoprene and bit of tin lower chain slap guide surrounds the shift shaft.

It attaches at the two points shown with yellow arrows. The right hand attachment point at the rear above is slotted, just loosen the nut on the case stud a little and it comes right off, even though it looks much more difficult to remove. Then tighten the nut back up. The other is a 10mm head, 6X1.0mm threaded bolt through the electric starter idler gear cover.
Ok,
I scrapped the rubber and bit of tin grunge catcher guide thing
(shown in both images above) smothering the shifter shaft and
under the chain a long time ago, it is just there to make the
shifter hang up : ) AND they shift much better without it. It
looks like it would be hard to remove but the two connection
points to case bolts have slotted ends so it comes off easily.
They don't come on 100's of other bikes and the XS650 Yamaha has
a shift shaft that is as big around as a rag top
"roadsters" driveshaft!! Then I mentioned at the
crawfish boil I was going to grind the shift shaft down some with
a ground flat spot at that close point for chain clearance with
an 18T sprocket and an O ring chain and guess what, it goes right
on anyway without that bit of tin thing. The stock shaft is big
where it goes through the LH engine cover for support, and it
comes already turned down where it needs to be for chain
clearance. Check out the image below! This is an 18 T front for
taller gearing (17T stock) with a stock 34T rear. Even with a 530
O ring chain and it has enough room.
